Fan Review: Fielder
& Firkin, Sutton, 18th December 1999.
It was a bit of a cock-up to begin with. When
we turned up, there was another band playing. This wasn't Tap! Then I saw the guys
standing by the bar. It turns out that the pub had double booked on bands but had allowed
both Vinyl Tap and Wired to play their sets. Tap went on first, but in order to get both
sets done, had to go on about 8pm instead of 9pm. Wired were actually pretty good. Good,
solid Ac/Dc style rock. But I wanted Tap. Wired finished their set and I was chomping at
the bit. before things could get dangerous, out stomped the guys, resplendent in their
usual over-the-top costumes, the epitome of early heavy rock. But there was something
different. It was probably the Santa suits!!!
Eddie stepped up to the mike.
"You want Christmas songs?" he
screamed, the window behind him providing the perfect backdrop as the snow fell in a white
sheet. The crowd screamed back an approval. Randy and Rick provided suitable crunch,
boogie guitar as the band broke into Rocking around the Christmas Tree. Fantastic. Some of
the crowd went crazy, the glam rock classics such as Merry Christmas Everyone slotting in
perfectly alongside the regular tunes. As always, a bloody good gig and an excellent
night.
The fun that the band has is always mirrored
on the faces of the crowd - even when it goes wrong - "You know what?" shouts
Eddie. "What?" the crowd shouts back. "I Wish it could be Christmas every
day!" shouts Eddie. The band start playing the classic but someone is in the wrong
key. "You know what?" shouts Eddie. "What?" shouts the crowd. "I
wish we could pllay it!" shouts Eddie. Everybody cheers as they start again. That's
the best thing about this band, they have a good time playing the music that they enjoy.
See you at the next gig boys, LET'S PARTY!!!
